Spring Storm Season in Georgia: How to Protect Your Home From the Roof Down

Spring in Georgia brings blooming dogwoods, warmer evenings, and a stretch of severe weather. Between March and June, homeowners across Gwinnett County can expect heavy rain, high winds, hail, and the occasional tornado warning. A little preparation now can save you from costly repairs later, and it starts at the top of your house.

Why Spring Storms Are So Hard on Georgia Homes

Warm, humid Gulf air meets cooler fronts from the west, creating fast-forming storms that can drop hail and push strong wind gusts. Even a short storm can lift shingles, clog gutters, and send branches onto your roof. The damage isn’t always visible from the ground, which is why many problems go unnoticed until a leak shows up on a ceiling.

Start With Your Roof

Your roof is your home’s first line of defense. Before storm season peaks, look for missing, curled, or cracked shingles, damaged flashing around chimneys and vents, and granules collecting at the bottom of downspouts. If your roof is more than 15 years old, it is worth having a professional take a closer look.

After a major storm, don’t climb up yourself. Hail bruises and wind-lifted shingles can be hard to spot, and walking on a damaged roof can make things worse. A trained inspector can document the damage with photos, which matters if you decide to file an insurance claim.

Don’t Forget Gutters, Trees, and the Rest of the Exterior

Clogged or sagging gutters can’t handle heavy spring rain. Water that overflows rots fascia boards, stains siding, and pools near your foundation. Clear out debris and make sure downspouts point away from the house.

Overhanging limbs are one of the biggest storm risks. Trim branches that hang over your roof, and keep an eye on any tree that leans, has dead limbs, or shows rot near the base.

Finally, check windows and exterior doors for worn seals; experienced window replacement contractors can tell you whether a unit needs resealing or replacing. Look for loose siding, and peek into your attic for damp insulation or water stains. Good attic airflow helps your roof dry out after heavy rain.

What to Do After the Storm Passes

If you notice damage, take photos right away, cover any openings with a tarp if it is safe to do so, and contact your insurance company. Water that gets inside can quickly damage drywall, flooring, and insulation, so the sooner repairs begin, the less you will spend.

Protect Your Home Before the Next Storm

Spring storms are part of life in Georgia, but serious damage doesn’t have to be. A little preparation, regular inspections, and quick action after severe weather will keep your roof, and everything under it, in good shape. When you need help, choose a local team that will give you an honest assessment, guide you through the insurance process, and stand behind its work.
