What to Expect the First Week After Bringing Home Your French Bulldog Puppy

The day you bring home your French Bulldog puppy is one of the most exciting moments of pet ownership. It can also feel a little overwhelming. For the first few days, your new companion is adjusting to unfamiliar sights, sounds, smells, and people, all without the littermates they grew up with. Knowing what’s normal during that first week helps you stay calm, set good habits early, and give your Frenchie the confident start they deserve.

Your Frenchie’s First Seven Days, Step by Step

Days One and Two: Decompression

Expect your puppy to sleep a lot, sometimes 18 to 20 hours a day, which is completely normal. Keep the first couple of days quiet: set up a small, cozy area with a crate, a soft bed, water, and a few chew toys, and hold off on inviting friends and family over to meet the new arrival. Some puppies whine at night as they miss their littermates, so placing the crate near your bed can help them settle.

Days Three and Four: Building a Routine

French Bulldogs thrive on consistency. Feed at the same times each day, using the same food your breeder sent home to avoid an upset stomach. Take your puppy outside right after waking, eating, and playing. Accidents will happen, so stay patient and reward every success with praise or a small treat. This is also a good time to start short, gentle handling sessions, touching paws, ears, and that famous wrinkled face, so grooming and vet visits feel routine later.

Days Five Through Seven: Growing Confidence

By the end of the first week, most puppies start to show their personalities. You’ll likely see more playfulness, curiosity, and those trademark Frenchie zoomies. Keep play sessions short, since this brachycephalic breed can overheat quickly, and watch for heavy panting on warm days. Schedule a wellness visit with your veterinarian within the first week, bringing along the vaccination and deworming records from your breeder.

Conclusion

The first week sets the tone for everything that follows. It’s the same advice you’ll hear from any breeder with French bulldogs for sale: with patience, a steady routine, and plenty of affection, your Frenchie will quickly go from nervous newcomer to confident member of the family. If you have questions along the way, a reputable breeder should always be happy to help, because the relationship doesn’t end the day your puppy goes home. Enjoy these early days, because they go by faster than you think.
